Neighbors in Action: Old Newsboys

http://www.lansingoldnewsboys.org/

It’s Wednesday and time for our Neighbors in Action segment, where we feature people and organizations working to make our community a better place. Today, we feature the Old Newsboys. This year marks the 90th anniversary the group has been distributing shoes, socks and boots to children in Lansing area schools. The latest issue of the Lansing Spoof Journal hits newsstands tomorrow.

Current State spoke with Luke Canfora, the president of the Old Newsboys, and Sean Douglas, the organization’s treasurer. Sean first explained how the organization distributes the thousands of shoes to children each year. They work through schools within 25 miles of the state capitol to find eligible children.

We could always use more nominations and we know there are great people and organizations out there that are doing excellent work and we just don’t know about them. Please help us out and send us an email to Currentstate@wkar.org or tweet us at @karcurrentstate and tell us why you think they should be featured for the great work they do.

Every WKAR News story you read is rooted in fact-based, local journalism, produced without commercial influence and available for free to everyone in mid-Michigan. No paywalls. Ever.

But this work doesn’t fund itself. With significant cuts to federal funding, public media is facing a critical moment. If you believe in journalism that serves the public interest, now is the time to act. Donate today.
