Hamtramck Stadium recognized for Negro League heritage

Longtime fans of the Detroit Tigers cling to their memories of Tiger Stadium. Many still visit the old site at Michigan and Trumbull in the Motor City to stand on that hallowed ground or run the base paths.

Detroit has another historic baseball site worth visiting called Hamtramck Stadium, which was once home to the Detroit Stars of baseball’s Negro Leagues. Current State’s Scott Pohl spent some time there recently and spoke with Jack Dempsey of the Michigan Historical Commission.

Today the site gets a long overdue historical marker and Dempsey says the site holds an important story and represents the progress that society has made since the Negro League was created.

Scott Pohl has maintained an on-call schedule reporting for WKAR following his retirement after 36 years on the air at the station.
