Deaths and losses: Hicks, Fernandez, Palmer, Spartans, and Lions

It was a sad weekend for sports fans with news of the deaths of former MSU defensive back Mylan Hicks, Miami Marlins pitching sensation Jose Fernandez and golf icon Arnold Palmer. Current Sports host Al Martin remembers those sports figures and looks at the losses for the Spartans and Lions.

Tomorrow is never promised and yesterday, the the Michigan State community as well as the entire sports world was reminded of that.

Former Detroit Renaissance High and Michigan State defensive back Mylan Hicks was the victim of a nightclub shooting in Canada over the weekend, becoming the second former Spartan football player to die this year. Former punter Mike Sadler, who was inducted into the Michigan State Athletics Hall of Fame this weekend, died this summer in a car accident.  News also broke yesterday about the passing of Miami Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez, as well as golf icon Arnold Palmer.

To try and put this emotional weekend into perspective as well as chat about the weekend losses for the Detroit Lions and Michigan State football team, we talk with Current Sports host Al Martin.

Al Martin is the host of Beyond the Score, a new series coming to WKAR in the fall of 2024. Al is also sports reporter for WKAR news.
