Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and four legislative leaders have met after she vetoed nearly $1 billion from the newly signed budget, but their discussion was mainly focused on policies such as criminal justice.
UPDATED at 4:00 p.m.: Negotiations to come up with a long-term plan to fix Michigan’s crumbling roads have been put on hold. Governor Gretchen Whitmer and the Republican Legislative leadership announced Monday that their main priority is the budget.
Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said she needs to have budget bills that include new money for roads on her desk by this time next month. But serious negotiations with the Legislature’s Republican leaders have not begun.
A spending plan for the Michigan Department of Corrections passed out of a state House committee. It would redirect millions of dollars that previous budgets had allocated for certain projects – like prison maintenance – to other priorities.
