Notable Books author returns home to celebrate Michigan letters

Courtesy of Steve Hamilton

On Saturday, the Library of Michigan Foundation will hold its annual Night for Notables event, honoring the authors of books that were named Michigan Notable Books for 2014. The keynote speaker at tomorrow’s event is Steve Hamilton.  His book “Misery Bay” was a Michigan Notable Book for 2012.

Each year, 20 books from the previous year are chosen for the list. The criteria include books having a Michigan theme, being set in Michigan or the Great Lakes Region, or written by a Michigan resident or native.

Hamilton joins us now to tell us about his work and what the Notable Book Award has meant to his writing career.

Many of his novels feature a character named Alex McKnight, a former Detroit cop who "checks out" to the loneliest place he can find, in Michigan's Upper Peninsula.

Scott Pohl has maintained an on-call schedule reporting for WKAR following his retirement after 36 years on the air at the station.
