For Neighbors in Action, we talk with John Leask of the Capital Area Literacy Coalition, also known as The Reading People.

The ability to read and write is of paramount importance, and according to the 2012 census survey, 20-percent of adults in the Greater Lansing area are illiterate. For Neighbors in Action today we’re checking back in with the Capital Area Literacy Coalition, sometimes referred to as “The Reading People.” They help children and adults learn to read, write and speak English with an ultimate goal of helping individuals achieve self-sufficiency.

To get an update on what the organization has been up to, we speak with board member and longtime volunteer John Leask.

Current State is always looking for more nominations for our “Neighbors In Action” feature. Please help us out and e-mail us your suggestions to currentstate@wkar.org. Put ‘Neighbors in Action’ in the subject line. Or tweet us: @KARCurrentState and tell us a little about why you think they should be featured.
