Central United Methodist Church near Comerica Park in Detroit is helping to lead a new sanctuary network.

A small coalition of interfaith churches is making a big statement in Michigan.  The group is declaring itself a “sanctuary network,” and says it will protect individuals and families on the verge of being deported.

WKAR’s Kevin Lavery spoke with the Rev. Dr. Jill Zundel, senior pastor at Central United Methodist Church in Detroit.  The church, which describes itself as the oldest Protestant congregation in Michigan, is helping to spearhead the movement in Michigan.

Kevin Lavery served as a general assignment reporter and occasional local host for Morning Edition and All Things Considered before retiring in 2023.
