High School Sports Participation Down For First Time In 30 Years

High School Sports
Al Martin / WKAR-MSU

The annual participation survey by the National Federation of State High School Assns. has shown a decline in sports participation for the first time in 30 years for the 2018-19 season.

Numbers showed a decline in 11-man football, which showed the biggest decline of all sports dropping by 30,829 to 1,006,013, which is the lowest mark since the 1999-2000 school year.

Current Sports host Al Martin talks with All Things Considered host Karel Vega about the reasoning behind the national decline in youth sports. Al also invites Geoff Kimmerly of the Michigan High School Athletic Association to provide some context of the survey as it pertains to participation numbers in the state of Michigan.

Al Martin is the host of Beyond the Score, a new series coming to WKAR in the fall of 2024. Al is also sports reporter for WKAR news.
