Detroit Superintendent: district needs “forward thinking, visionary” board

Alycia Meriweather is the interim superindent of public schools in Detroit.

The Detroit Public Schools will get more than $600-million to begin paring down debt and to launch a new debt-free district. Current State talks with interim Superintendent Alycia Meriweather.

The Detroit Public Schools have been embroiled in controversy and uncertainty lately. It's faced the threat of insolvency, mass teacher sick-outs, deplorable school conditions and failing grades.

Interim Superintendent Alycia Meriweather was named to that position in March. She is the district's former Director of Curriculum and a University of Michigan graduate.

Current State talks with Meriweather about the challenges she faces in Detroit.
