Soon, the Detroit Public Schools will consider hiring classroom teachers who haven’t earned teaching certificates. We hear from two critics of placing uncertified teachers in Detroit classrooms.

The standards for becoming a classroom teacher in the Detroit Public Schools will be changing soon. Part of the Michigan’s DPS bailout, DPS 2.0, effectively relaxed teacher certification standards in the district.

Advocates for the change, including Gov. Rick Snyder, have been making their case for some years. But others resist the change.

We talk with Dr. Margaret Crocco, Chairperson of Department of Teacher Education at Michigan State University’s College of Education, and Sonya Gunnings-Moton, Assistant Dean of Student Support Services and Recruitment with MSU’s College of Education.
