WKAR News has learned a Lansing charter school with Afrocentric studies is closing.

The El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz Academy opened in 1995.

In May, Central Michigan University notified the school it would not renew its charter agreement due to poor academic performance.

The academy had until June 30 to find another university to authorize its charter.

However, when WKAR Education reporter Kevin Lavery tried to contact the school for comment on Wednesday morning, a staff member told him the school is closing and they have no comments for the media.

Kevin Lavery served as a general assignment reporter and occasional local host for Morning Edition and All Things Considered before retiring in 2023.
