Enbridge On The Hot Seat Monday at Michigan Pipeline Board Meeting

Enbridge Energy will be on the hot seat when the Michigan pipeline safety board meets Monday in Lansing. The Canadian company will be asked to explain how it’s ensuring the oil pipeline Line Five is safe.

Enbridge has to explain why areas of protective coating on Line Five where it runs beneath the Straits of Mackinac were accidentally removed, and give an update on the company’s plans to comply with an agreement to fix that.

Guy Jarvis with Enbridge said the company understands the fate of Line Five hangs in the balance.

“We’re committed to the letter and spirit of this important agreement, and to the options outlined in the agreement that move us to a longer-term set of decisions about the future of Line 5," said Jarvis.  “Any of these other alternatives really do not make practical sense for serving the state of Michigan, and the best option for serving the state of Michigan is via the straits.”

Environmental groups will demand the state pipeline council call for the shutdown of Line Five as a threat to the Great Lakes.

They will call on the commission to advise Governor Rick Snyder and state Attorney General Bill Schuette to use their authority to shut down the oil and gas line.
