National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day is Saturday. The Michigan State Police will work with the Drug Enforcement Administration to accept drugs at 30 posts around Michigan.
Twice a year, the DEA and police departments accept unwanted, leftover prescription drugs for proper disposal. Last fall, state police posts took in more than 800 pounds of drugs on Drug Take-Back Day.
Michigan State Police posts will take drugs in from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday. That includes the Lansing post on Canal Road and the Jackson post on Cooper Street. Trooper Jeremiah Levesque says only pills will be accepted. “What we’re not going to be accepting is any kind of syringes, any kind of liquid drugs, inhalers, patches,” Trooper Levesque explains.
The pills will be destroyed. Throwing pills in the trash or flushing them down the toilet can lead to safety and health hazards.
If those Saturday hours are inconvenient, the state police say drugs can be turned in anonymously at any MSP post weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
