Archeologists still unearthing 300 years of Michilimackinac history

One of the most popular tourist sites in Michigan is Colonial Michilimackinac. It’s well within walking distance of the Mackinac Bridge, just to the west along the Lake Michigan shoreline. The old French trading post that later became a British fort turns 300 years old in 2015, and parts of its original past lie just below the surface.Michilimackinac has been the site of a summer excavation since 1959. There’s a very impressive museum there that houses a lot of artifacts, but it’s still not finished.

Current State’s Kevin Lavery went there to learn about the archeological dig.

Kevin Lavery served as a general assignment reporter and occasional local host for Morning Edition and All Things Considered before retiring in 2023.
