Lansing Mayor Andy Schor announced there will be a public conversation at Lansing City market next Thursday, July 26 from 6-8 pm to discuss ideas for the building’s future. Katie Cook has more.
After many years of subsidizing Lansing City Market with tax dollars, City Council recently voted to eliminate the subsidy provided from the City of Lansing. The building will close around Labor Day.
Lansing residents walking around downtown on Wednesday told WKAR what they’d like to see happen with the building.
Lenny Robinson wants more entertainment options after the work day.
“I would like to see something that goes on each evening after 5 o’clock because this places clears out. Maybe a restaurant, a bar, some kind of entertainment venue. Dancing would be good because there’s no place to dance in Lansing.”
Caitlin Parker thinks the Waterfront Bar and Grill should stay.
“I like the bar, the riverfront restaurant, it’s really nice and it’s fun to hang out and it’s a beautiful view. So I think they should keep it.”
Some others passing on the street liked the idea of a grocery store going in the space.
“This area hurts for a Trader Joe’s. We’re for Trader Joe’s,” they said.
One proposal is to sell the building and property to a private entity, but Lansing voters would have to approve the sale.
If council passes the proposal in time, it will be on the ballot in November.
