Names of 2 Killed In Livingston County Plane Crash Released

UPDATED Thursday at 12:00 p.m.: Authorities have released the names of two men who were killed in a small plane crash near Howell. 

The Livingston County Sheriff's Office said Wednesday that the men who were killed were 68-year-old James Tafralian, of Webberville, and 64-year-old Philip Henry Colmer, of Chelsea.

The Federal Aviation Administration says the single-engine Aero Commander M200 aircraft was taking off at Spencer J. Hardy Airport near Howell when it crashed Tuesday morning. Livingston County Sheriff Mike Murphy says the plane was landing when it crashed.

The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating.

UPDATED Tuesday at 3:00 p.m.: Authorities say two people died when a small plane crashed at an airport in Livingston County.

Livingston County Sheriff Mike Murphy said in a news release that the single-engine Aero Commander M200 aircraft was landing at Spencer J. Hardy Airport near Howell when it crashed late Tuesday morning. The Federal Aviation Administration says the plane was taking off when it crashed. The FAA is investigating.

Murphy says two people were aboard and both were killed. Their names haven't been released.

The Livingston Daily Press & Argus reports that a British-based company, Southern Aircraft Consultancy Inc., appears to have registered the aircraft with the FAA. The company specializes in helping non-citizens register their planes in the U.S.

Howell is about 40 miles east of Lansing and about 45 miles northwest of Detroit.

UPDATED at Tuesday at 1:30 p.m.: The Livingston County Sheriff's Department confirms that a small airplane has crashed at the Livingston County Spencer J. Hardy Airport in Howell.

WLNS-TV is reporting the crash killed two people but no other details have been released. WLNS-TV is a media partner of WKAR News.

The airport, at 3399 County Airport Road, is closed. The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board will conduct an investigation into the accident, officials at the airport told WKAR News.

Roads near the airport remain open.
