Michigan Secretary of State Ruth Johnson faces a lawsuit over her refusal to grant drivers licenses to some young immigrants.
Those immigrants were brought to the United States illegally as children, and were considered “undocumented.”
They’re now authorized to live and work in the United States because of a federal program President Obama introduced last summer.
But Johnson maintains they’re not authorized to be “present” in the country, and therefore are not eligible to get licenses.
ACLU attorney Miriam Aukerman says the policy is incorrect, and illegal.
“She will continue to enforce her policy unless the federal government tells her otherwise," she says. "Because she has been unwilling to change her policy, we have no choice but to go to court.”
Aukerman says Michigan is one of only three states taking this stance on the driver license issue.
