The Listening Ear Crisis Center in East Lansing recently fired several counselors when it was discovered that they are registered sex offenders. Sen. Curtis Hertel Jr. is drafting a bill to prohibit registered sex offenders from working as counselors. We talk with Sen. Hertel about the legislation.
Three volunteer counselors have been dismissed by the Listening Ear Crisis Intervention Center in East Lansing after if was discovered that they were on Michigan’s sex offender registry. Justin Hinckley of the Lansing State Journal first reported the story. Along with firing the three people, the Listening Ear will begin performing background checks on all counselors.
As a result of the incident, State Sen. Curtis Hertel Jr. has begun drafting legislation to prevent registered sex offenders from counseling sexual assault victims or children.
Current State talks with Sen. Hertel about what Michigan law has been lacking.
