The Michigan House, and now the Senate, have passed various proposals to reform and modernize the state’s criminal justice system. We talk with the effort’s leader in the Senate, Republican John Proos.

Proponents have long said Michigan needs a smarter and more modern criminal justice system. An ongoing effort took a turn two weeks ago when the state Senate passed a package of 20 bills. Supporters say it will help reform and modernize Michigan’s criminal justice system.

State Sen. John Proos (R-St. Joseph) says they will break a cycle of incarceration in Michigan and lower the system’s soaring costs while keeping the public safe.

The Michigan House of Representatives is expected to begin considering the bills when it returns to Lansing.

Current State talks with Sen. Proos about the measures.
