Gretchen Whitmer has been appointed interim Ingham County Prosecutor, starting in July.

Former Democratic state legislator Gretchen Whitmer of East Lansing will become Ingham County’s interim prosecutor in July. We ask what it’ll take to restore integrity to the office, about any other future plans and get her thoughts on the Democratic Presidential Primary campaign.

Last week, former state legislator Gretchen Whitmer of East Lansing was chosen to be Ingham County prosecutor on an interim basis. A seven-member panel of county circuit judges appointed her unanimously to the post. Whitmer will assume the post on July 2, when prosecutor Stuart Dunnings III formally steps down. He faces various charges involving prostitution.

For several years, the veteran Democratic lawmaker has been discussed as a potential Democratic candidate for higher office in Michigan: Governor or Attorney General.

The East Lansing resident has been an attorney at legal firm Dickenson Wright since being term limited out of the state Senate last year.
