It’s been a tight race, but Nessel’s opponent – Speaker of the House Tom Leonard – conceded Wednesday morning During a speech before results were finalized, Nessel said she would be an Attorney General for everyone in Michigan.

“I don’t care what your race, or your religion, or your ethnicity, or your national origin, or your sexual orientation, or your gender identity – you belong here!” Nessel excalimed during her victory speech.

Nessel will be the first openly gay person to hold statewide office in Michigan.
