Right to Read | Screening with Q&A

Thu. May 20, 2021 at 7pm on WKAR OVEE - RSVP HERE | Join the conversation at a virtual preview screening of the upcoming WKAR original documentary, Right to Read. The film presents the moving story of Michigan families attempting to secure the right to read for their children. 
Following the film screening will be a Q&A session with a panel discussing the film; Michigan's third grade reading law and its impact on children and families; and reading proficiency resources and support available to families.
 
Speakers include:

  • Dr. Patricia Edwards, Professor of Language and Literature in Teacher Education at Michigan State University

Right to Read presents the moving story of Michigan families attempting to secure the right to read for their children.?Facing challenging circumstances -- like social inequity, Michigan's Read by Grade Three law, and limited access to books -- parents, educators and experts weigh in on how to solve the literacy crisis in Michigan. The goal??To encourage the joy of reading and promote childhood literacy at home. Right to Read is a WKAR original production.

Right to Read airs in mid-Michigan on Thursday, June 3, 2021, at 9:30 p.m. on WKAR-HD 23.1 and streaming. 

A NEW KIND OF VIRTUAL EVENT - OVEE
This film screening and conversation is a virtual event hosted by WKAR on the OVEE platform. OVEE stands for Online Viewing and Engagement Experience.

Created by ITVS and funded by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), OVEE combines quality HD media and livestream content with the community-building conversation of social media in a single-screen experience.

First-time registrants will create a free OVEE account and will be asked to provide their birthdate to verify their age as 13 or older. Accounts can be anonymous.
