Conservative Michigan group pursues legal action against MEA

http://www.mackinac.org/

A new dispute involving Michigan’s recently enacted "Right to Work" law unfolded this week. On Monday, Midland’s Mackinac Center Legal Foundation announced it’s taking action against the Michigan Education Association. The conservative organization alleges the MEA, a 150,000-member union mostly representing teachers, did not allow eight teachers who wanted to stop paying union dues to drop out.

Patrick Wright, director of the Mackinac Center Legal Foundation, disputes what he describes as the union's claim that their constitution and bylaws requirement that people are only allowed to withdraw in the month of August trumps state law.

Doug Pratt of the MEA will appear on Current State next Tuesday.
