Security expert vows prompt, independent review of BWL

A retired military officer and former homeland security official turned Cooley Law School law professor will oversee an independent review of the embattled Lansing Board of Water and Light.Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero announced General Michael C.H. McDaniel’s new role late Wednesday.

The East Lansing resident will appoint members of a ‘Community Review Team,’ that will conduct, in McDaniel's words, an “objective, comprehensive and transparent” review of the utility’s intensely criticized response to a December ice storm. The BWL says the storm resulted in power outages for at least 35,000 people, some for up to 11 days.

McDaniel says most of his public service has been at the state and federal level. He sees this review as an opportunity to give back to the community.
