The Black History 101 Mobile Museum will be in Lansing today. The museum’s Peacemakers exhibit includes more than 150 artifacts and can be seen in the Sparrow Professional Building on the third floor atrium from 10 am to 5 pm. Current State’s Scott Pohl is here with more on the exhibit.
Khalid el-Hakim started the collection 22 years ago while he was a student at Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Michigan. A professor had used Jim Crow era memorabilia in the classroom, which he found to be a compelling way to speak about race in America. He started buying similar memorabilia at flea markets and antique shops and used his collection to teach history in Detroit schools. The Mobile Museum lets him take his collection on the road.
el-Hakim says that the exhibition in Lansing will mark the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King receiving the Nobel Peace Prize by focusing on individuals of African decent who have won the Peace Prize.
