Flickr - Steve Petrucelli

Last December, some high tech grinches tried to steal Christmas for one major retailer. Computer hackers broke into the Target Corporation mainframe and downloaded some 40-million credit card numbers.  The breach was executed despite the fact that Target had installed malware detection software months before.Today, Michigan State University is hosting its first ever interdisciplinary conference on cybercrime. Current State's Kevin Lavery spoke with Jared Andrews, an information technologist at Michigan State. He says there are a variety of viruses that work their way into email servers.

Kevin Lavery served as a general assignment reporter and occasional local host for Morning Edition and All Things Considered before retiring in 2023.
