Keith Mumphery Reportedly Expelled In 2016 Following Sexual Misconduct Investigation

Last year, former Michigan State football player Keith Mumphery was expelled and prohibited from campus for sexual misconduct as determined by a university investigation, the Detroit Free Press reported on Wednesday.

The expulsion spawned from a March 17, 2015 encounter between Mumphery  and a female student in her dorm room. The documents, acquired by the Detroit Free Press from Michigan State University Police, suggest dispute over consent and sexual advancement.

The detailed report was handed off from MSU Police to the Ingham County Prosecutor's Office, at the time led by Stuart Dunnings III. Although MSU Police advocated for third-degree criminal sexual conduct charges to be levied, assistant prosecutor Steve Kwasnik declined to press charges in August of 2015 on the grounds of insufficient evidence and lack of communication by the accuser.

MSU, however, conducted its own investigation--outside of the legal realm--into the March 2015 incident. On June 7, 2016, Denise Maybank, vice president of MSU's Division of Student Affairs and Services, informed Mumphery that he had violated the university code on relationship violence and sexual misconduct.

Mumphery was immediately expelled from his graduate studies program and banned from campus until Dec. 31, 2018. The Houstan Texans wide receiver is subject to imprisonment if he violates the terms of his campus ban.

The revealing of Mumphery's investigation, previously undisclosed to the public, comes on the heels of several sexual misconduct cases involving Michigan State football players. Auston Robertson was arraigned on third-degree criminal sexual conduct charges in April. Three other unnamed players were found in violation of the policy by the university for a January occurence, although there is no punishment yet.

Head coach Mark Dantonio also terminated the university's relationship with Curtis Blackwell, who was suspended with pay during the investigation.
