Pilot program seeks permanent housing for Lansing's homeless

Kevin Lavery/WKAR

Michigan’s long winter months can give anyone the blues, but it’s an especially dangerous time for the homeless. Hundreds of people in mid-Michigan live on the streets, and their circumstances are diverse. In Lansing, officials are so far pleased with the results of a pilot program to move 11 people out of a makeshift camp and into permanent housing.Current State’s Kevin Lavery reports that Volunteers of America Michigan is at the forefront, but they’re also working with about a half a dozen other local agencies.

Kevin Lavery served as a general assignment reporter and occasional local host for Morning Edition and All Things Considered before retiring in 2023.
