Univ. of Virginia President, MSU Alum Teresa Sullivan To Advise MSU On New President Search

The Michigan State University Board of Trustees has hired a university president as an adviser to assist in its own search for a new, permanent president.

Dr. Teresa A. Sullivan is the president of the University of Virginia, a role she’s held since 2010.  But she has strong academic ties in Michigan.  Sullivan received her undergraduate and an honorary degree from Michigan State University, and also served as provost of the University of Michigan.

MSU trustee Dianne Byrum says the board’s first task will be to hold a series of listening sessions to learn what the university is looking for in a new leader.

“I hope we can start that as early as this summer and continue it into the fall,” says Byrum.  “But we’ve not determined at this point in time what that search process is going to look like, and that’s what we’re going to be working on with Dr. Sullivan.”

Sullivan will step down from her post at UVA in July.

The current interim president is former Michigan governor John Engler. He took over the role after Lou Anna K. Simon stepped down under pressure because of how the university handled abuse complaints against former campus physician Larry Nassar.
