Today is National HIV Testing Day. Across Michigan this weekend there will be events and opportunities for free HIV tests, including Ingham County, which has one of the highest HIV prevalence rates in the state.
The nationwide campaign also offers a chance to look at how prevention and treatment methods have evolved and what barriers to treatment still exist.
Current State was joined by Dwayne Riley, prevention coordinator for the Lansing Area AIDS Network, and Todd Heywood, local journalist and HIV education activist, to tell us more about what’s happening in the fight against HIV and AIDS.
Riley says that even though testing numbers have increased, HIV is still an epidemic and the reason why people aren’t getting tested is because of the negative stigma that goes along with having HIV/AIDS.
