Ingham County Offers Health Insurance Marketplace Help

The deadline to apply in this year’s health insurance marketplace open enrollment is December 15th.

WKAR health reporter Scott Pohl reports that help is available from the Ingham County Health Department.

Trained, certified assisters will help people navigate their health coverage options free of charge at the Ingham County Health Department’s health centers. Health Officer Linda Vail says the county has run a registration enrollment office for many years, “and when this came along, they all became certified navigators, certified application counselors, so that they could help people with navigating healthcare.gov, the marketplace.”

“Our people don’t recommend or advise in any way, shape or form what somebody should do," Vail adds, "but can help them look at options, discuss those options, pros and cons related to those options, those sorts of things, so people can make decisions.”

Vail concludes that those who have enrolled in the marketplace before should review their plan before the December 15th deadline, and the uninsured, those who anticipate a gap in coverage, and people who don’t qualify for Medicaid should look into their options.

Scott Pohl is a general assignment news reporter and produces news features and interviews. He is also an alternate local host on NPR's "Morning Edition."
