Michigan State University’s Office of Institutional Equity has released its mid-year Title IX report, which focuses on data from the 2016 fall semester.

The report discloses a total of 337 reported incidents, an increase from the 167 reported incidents from the 2015 fall semester.

The bulk of the 337 incidents were classified under the categories of dating violence, retaliation and sexual assault. Of the 337 incidents, only 37 received formal investigation.

226 cases received no investigation due to non-participation. The remaining 74 cases that were not investigated were listed as being out of MSU’s jurisdiction, or failing to meet Title IX standards.

Cases that are not investigated are still reviewed to study patterns and to develop improvements for Title IX policies and procedures.

The average time to complete these investigations was 80 days. Common reasons for extensions included: law enforcement delay, additional parties coming forward and academic breaks.

The outcomes of the investigations lead to sanctions against six students and nine employees.
