A former emergency manager for two Michigan school districts has been selected as interim superintendent of Flint's public schools after the school board removed the superintendent and two other senior officials.

The Flint Journal reports Gregory Weatherspoon was unanimously approved for the post Wednesday by the Flint Board of Education as the district looks for a permanent replacement.

Weatherspoon formerly oversaw Highland Park and Muskegon Heights schools.

The board's president announced Tuesday that Bilal Tawwab, assistant superintendent Shawn Merriweather and the district's lawyer have been placed on leave.

No reasons were disclosed, although the superintendent had said he didn't want to keep his job beyond the next school year.

The Flint district has roughly 4,500 students, and enrollment has been falling steadily. In 1968, Flint schools had 47,000 students.
