A petition drive to block a new medical marijuana ordinance in Lansing has failed.
The group “Let Lansing Vote” submitted 6,500 signatures in hopes of either forcing the city to repeal the ordinance or put it to a public vote. But Lansing City Clerk Chris Swope says just under 3,900 of those signatures were valid.
Swope says there were incorrect forms, some signers were not registered to vote in Lansing, and others signed the petition more than once.
He says the city charter gives the organizers 10 additional days to submit more signatures.
“So, we could still see this come back,” says Swope. “But because they did not within 30 days submit the sufficient number of signatures, the ordinance adopted by the city council will be in effect.”
The rejection means Lansing will begin accepting applications for four separate types of medical marijuana operations on October 24.
Provisioning center applications will be accepted at a later date.
