At the US Conference of Mayors, the hot conversation is about lead. Mayors from across the country are taking in the lessons of the Flint water crisis.

Among them is Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero, who leads a community just 50 miles away.

Current State’s Kevin Lavery talks with Bernero about the conference, Lansing's $650 million in retiree health care and pension obligations, and the Flint water crisis.

Kevin Lavery served as a general assignment reporter and occasional local host for Morning Edition and All Things Considered before retiring in 2023.
