Elections officials in the Lansing area report that they are mailing out a record number of absentee ballots this year. That’s as early voting by absentee ballot begins today in Michigan.
Clerks Chris Swope in Lansing, Jennifer Schuster in East Lansing and Evan Hope in Delhi Township say that together, they’ve mailed more than 45,000, allots to voters, and the number goes up every day. More than 28,000 have been sent to Lansing voters, 9,100 have gone out in Delhi, and another 8,600 have been mailed in East Lansing.
Along with mailing them in, voters can drop them off at clerks offices or at designated dropboxes.
Michigan Court of Claims Judge Cynthia Stephens has ruled that the state must accept ballots that are postmarked by November 2nd, as long as they arrive within 14 days of the November 3rd election. In the past, only ballots received by 8 pm on Election Day were counted.
