Neighbors in Action: Help Other People Eat (H.O.P.E.)

Flickr - ON THE MOON STUDIO

It’s Wednesday and time for our Neighbors in Action segment, where we feature people and organizations working to make our community a better place. With this Friday being the opening of the firearm deer hunting season in Michigan, it’s only appropriate that we feature Help Other People Eat, or HOPE, which distributes excess venison donated by hunters to those in need.Current State spoke with HOPE is its founder Tom Cullimore and Mark Criss, director of the City Rescue Mission in Lansing, which puts the venison to good use. Cullimore started HOPE in 2005 when he saw that meat made up the biggest portion of any food bank's budget. Since then, HOPE has provided more than 210,000 meals.

We could always use more nominations and we know there are great people and organizations out there that are doing excellent work and we just don’t know about them. Please help us out and send us an email about these great non-profits in the area to Currentstate@wkar.org. Put “Neighbors in Action” in the subject line and tell us why you think they should be featured for the great work they do.
