Current Sports | WKAR | Grand Ledge Football Season Recap

As Grand Ledge football (4-3 overall) prepares for a playoff run, head coach Matt Bird is stressing to his players that keeping the tradition of Comet football in mind is going to be an essential piece of a playoff puzzle.

“What we try to focus on is the tradition,” he said. “A lot of guys come back here that have worn the GL on their helmet, and our guys remember those guys, when you remember that you have a pride factor involved in that.”

Following a hard schedule to start the season Grand Ledge hit their stride in late Sept. and early Oct. Wins against Okemos, Jackson and Eastern High School in Lansing by an average score of 38-7 has put the Comets in a position for a late playoff push.

“We’re improving,” he said. “Went through a gauntlet of a schedule at first and it was good to get through those games first."

Grand Ledge has used a versatile offensive attack that changes depending on who they face.

“We go in with a game plan and you try to find out what works and what doesn’t,” he said. “The high school game moves so fast, we can spread, we’re trying to get our athletes in a position to make a play on their non-athlete.”

A calling card of Grand Ledge’s recent success has been their defense, something that bird said he tries to keep as simple as possible.

“We don’t throw a lot of bells and whistles at you,” he said. “We try to be very basic in our approach, it comes down to if you can block and tackle better than the other team.”

Grand Ledge’s next game will be at East Lansing (1-6 overall) Friday October 17.
