Today, Gov. Rick Snyder declared a state of disaster in Lansing, Grand Rapids and 17 Michigan counties. It follows the heavy rainfall and snowmelt that caused widespread flooding in late February.
Included in the declaration are Allegan, Arenac, Barry, Berrien, Cass, Clare, Eaton, Ingham, Ionia, Kalamazoo, Kent, Mecosta, Newaygo, Ogemaw, Oscoda, Ottawa and St. Joseph counties.
The cities of Lansing and Grand Rapids are also included.
By declaring a state of disaster, local governments can apply for grants to receive reimbursement for response costs up to $100,000.
The city of Lansing said at least 200 structures in the city and Lansing Township were damaged by floodwaters.
