Existing efforts to improve academic performance at Lansing's three public high schools could exempt them from a new state turnaround proposal.
A measure introduced in the state legislature would empower the state to supervise chronically failing schools.
A school would be considered failing if less than 35% of its students were meeting standard proficiency in math or English, or if it did not meet federal "No Child Left Behind" benchmarks for four straight years.
Democratic Representative Tim Melton is a co-sponsor.
Melton says public and expert testimony on the proposal will begin in about two weeks.
