Cyclotron expansion dedicated

By Scott Pohl, WKAR News

EAST LANSING, MI – Michigan State University Friday dedicated a major expansion of the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory. The celebration also looked ahead to the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams, or F-RIB, a newly-awarded research facility which will be constructed at MSU.

U-S Department of Energy Undersecretary Pete Koonin F-RIB will make MSU one of the world's leading destinations for scientists: "From my point of view, this project is one that will enable research at the forefront of nuclear science. It will be executed by a team with first-class credentials and it will be set in one of the country's premier research universities."

Koonin says F-RIB is part of the Obama administration's "commitment to science." F-RIB will cost $550-million to build. Officials hope to have the facility running in 2017.
