Current State talks with author Kevin P. Keefe about his book on the Pere Marquette 1225 locomotive in Owosso.

The Pere Marquette 1225 steam locomotive in Owosso is one of mid-Michigan’s cultural treasures. Children know it as “The North Pole Express” that makes short joyrides during the holiday season, but this magnificent machine once stood at the top of railroad technology, proudly serving America during World War Two. We talk with author Kevin P. Keefe about the legendary Number 1225.

Keefe is a journalist, author and lifelong railroad buff. He’s the author of the book “Twelve Twenty-Five: The Life and Times of a Steam Locomotive.” He’s an MSU graduate who’s back on campus tonight for a book signing at an open house sponsored by the MSU Archives to mark the locomotive’s 75th anniversary.

Kevin Lavery served as a general assignment reporter and occasional local host for Morning Edition and All Things Considered before retiring in 2023.
