Lansing mayor Virg Bernero said he is not surprised that State Rep. Andy Schor was elected as the next mayor on Tuesday night.

Speaking at a watch party at Los Rancheros in Lansing, Bernero said he looking forward to working with Mayor-elect Schor.

"I'm looking forward to a very successful transition," said Bernero. "I think Lansing is headed in the right direction in a lot of ways. Of course we have challenges like a lot of cities do in Michigan and around the country. But all of the train lines - most of the train lines are headed in the right direction."

In February, Bernero announced he would not seek re-election after serving as mayor for 12 years.

Bernero's term as mayor of Lansing experies on January 1, 2018.
