Month after groundbreaking Marketplace developer updates project

Wikimedia Commons

Yesterday, we got our first look at a new, long anticipated building project in downtown Lansing. The Gillespie Group tweeted the photo of its ‘Marketplace Project’ yesterday, about a month after breaking ground near the intersection of Cedar and Shiawassee Streets, north of downtown.

The 'Marketplace Project' has endured its share of challenges.  Last Spring, the development had to overcome a threat of legal action.  Lansing’s top economic development execution, Bob Trezise of the Lansing Economic Area Partnership, said the city was considering action against the Gillespie Group over an alleged delay in breaking ground.  However, the differences were settled shortly thereafter.

Pat Gillespie of the Gillespie Group says the first development on the former Lansing City Market site will be a building with 80 rental units, and there's room on the site for three more buildings.
