Budget cuts force Detroit office closings Friday

By AP

DETROIT – Several city offices are closing with the first of Detroit Mayor Dave Bing's 26 budget-mandated unpaid furlough days for nonunion workers and appointees.

Bing's office says Friday's closings include administrative hearings, the Detroit Building Authority, Cable Communications Commission, Environmental Affairs, Targeted Business Development, and Jobs and Business Development.

Bing's order affects about 3,000 workers and expires June 30, 2011. The closures are a 10 percent pay cut, and part of his plan to balance the city's budget and cut into a $300 million deficit.

Bing has threatened to lay off hundreds of unionized workers if unions don't accept a similar wage cut and other concessions.
