LANSING, MI –
Michigan has filed its new application to try and win extra federal money for public schools.
The Michigan Department of Education says Thursday it has turned in its latest application for Race to the Top money. The application seeks about $400 million and outlines how Michigan would use the money to try and improve school performance.
The Michigan plan focuses on improving student achievement and builds on new laws approved in January.
The application received broad support from local school boards and teachers unions.
Only Tennessee and Delaware won money in the first round of the Obama administration competition aimed at improving schools.
Several states are trying to win money in the competition's second round.
