Body of Michigan airman killed in Afghanistan returns to U.S.

Traverse City, MI – The remains of a Michigan native killed in an insurgent attack in Afghanistan have been returned to the U.S. Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana confirmed Sunday that the body of Tech. Sergeant Matthew Schwartz of Traverse City was flown to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware. Funeral arrangements were incomplete Sunday.

The Pentagon says the 34-year-old and two others died Thursday when an improvised explosive device hit them in Helmand province.

Schwartz was an explosive ordnance disposal specialist out of F.E. Warren Air Force Base in Wyoming.

He was a 1996 Traverse City Central High School graduate with 12 years in the Air Force.
