June is known as LGBT Pride Month around the world and plenty of celebration events in Michigan.
Mid-Michigan has a long history in the push for equality for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning (LGBTQ) communities.
In 1972, East Lansing became the first city in the United States to ban discrimination in hiring practices based on sexual orientation. That action predated similar ordinances in New York City and San Francisco.
According to Equality Michigan, which advocates for LGBT inclusion in Michigan laws and policies, there are now 42 cities and towns across Michigan that ban discrimination based on sexual orientation. However, there is not a statewide law.

Saturday, June 17 - Noon Parade begins at Adado Riverfront Park and ends at State Capitol steps.
1:00-2:00 p.m. - Old Town Street Party featuring Starfarm Band, Ty Teon and Emma Saphire.
GRAND RAPIDS - Pride Festival
Saturday, June 17 - Noon-Midnight - Pride Festival in Calder Plaza featuring singer Billy Gilman.
