A woman whose complaint about sports doctor Larry Nassar was dismissed by police in Michigan's Meridian Township has been hired by the same community to train people about sexual misconduct.
Brianne Randall-Gay will be paid $30,000 under a one-year agreement approved Tuesday. Township Manager Frank Walsh says the goal is to educate people about preventing and reporting sexual assault, especially young adults.
The training will include police officers who will hear the Seattle-area woman's story.
"She'll be coming here at least three times over the next year to engage us, engage the community in a prevention program," said Meridian Township manager Frank Walsh. "I'm just thankful that we've been able to develop the relationship we had after what happened in 2004."
Randall-Gay was 17 when she told police in 2004 that Nassar had molested her during an appointment. Meridian Township police dropped the case after Nassar insisted he had performed a legitimate procedure with his hands.
“We didn’t believe her. We believed Nassar and we missed it and we’re so remorseful for that,” said Walsh.
Township officials apologized in January and said police were deceived. Nassar is serving decades in prison for sexual assault and child pornography.
