Detroit Unions: Keep State Away from New Contracts

A federal judge is telling lawyers to return to court Tuesday in a dispute over the state's likely veto of contract concessions approved by Detroit city workers.
Unions say the rights of members would be trampled if Gov. Rick Snyder steps in and says the revised contracts aren't good enough. The state is trying to negotiate a deal with Detroit to fix its finances and has signaled it won't honor the changes endorsed by city workers.

Federal Judge Arthur Tarnow met with lawyers Monday and told them to return Tuesday. The state says it's not doing anything illegal because Detroit officials haven't yet approved the new contracts. Deputy Mayor Kirk Lewis says the union deals are dead.
